Boy Drowns In North Fork River

Tragedy struck in the Quicksand neighborhood Tuesday when Langan Smith, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Smith, met his death by drowning in the North Fork of the Kentucky River.

Young Smith and a cousin, William Quinn Landrum, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Landrum, also of near Quicksand, went fishing. The Smith lad is reported to have thrown a line into the river, lost his balance and toppled into the water.

When the body was located some three years later it was entangled in a line. Smith could swim, but may have been held down by the line or by cramps. The accident occurred just back of the Dalton garage and near the Smith home. Dr. F. C. Lewis and policeman Pedro Combs were called and applied artificial respiration without success.

The boy is described as a "lovely child," who made and kept friends easily. Besides his parents he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Matt Deaton of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Vivian and Phyllis at home; three brothers: Earl, Bobby, and J. D., all at home.

Funeral services are being conducted this afternoon (Thursday, May 7th) at 1:30 p.m. at the residence with Rev. Wilfrid Taylor and Rev. Walter Wulschleger officiating. Interment will be in the Robinson Cemetery.
