The old mill on the Panhandle was destroyed by high water over 100 years ago, but continued to stand until about 1914. However the tunnel through the Panhandle remained until the Cutoff was made in 1956. Many Jackson youths tell of the daring swim they once made through this dark hole. At least one swimmer did not make the dangerous trip. He lost his life trying. The tunnel was cut through the ridge some 150 years ago. Another landmark gone.
