South Jackson - from Town Hill about 1940. Note the cluster of old houses at bottom center. In the middle of these stood Sizemore's Studio ( white building surrounded by trees). It was A.S. Sizemore and his wife Vergie who for more than 50 years caught the images of Breathitt County on film. To the left is the old Ice House on the property of Mereth Redwine. The L & N Depot can be seen at bottom right along with the Adams Express building. The large brick buildings housed stores. Powell-Hackney Wholesalers was right up the street. The very large building near the center housed the Jackson Lumber Company. At left across the river, it looks as if part of what is now Picnic Hill was cleared and a road was being built up the hill.
