Quicksand Photos

The village of Quicksand, three miles south of Jackson, has a history which is today well-hidden. Few could guess that the peaceful settlement was once the scene of one of the largest lumber operations in the world. Several large mills employing hundreds of workers were once located here. However, by 1924 the huge supply of virgin timber in Breathitt County had been harvested and there was no longer a need for the mills. However for a short period beginning about 1912 and ending about 1923, Quicksand was a boom town. The following pictures may help to illustrate its boom period.
