Quicksand Grade School - located in the village of Quicksand until it was torn down about thirty years ago. Seen here about 1959, the old school stood atop a hill high above the village. During its history the old building had been the home of Breathitt County High School from 1927-1937. At right of the big building is the long building which housed the lunchroom, the principal's (Mr. Burton Conway) office, and Mrs. Dorothy Campbell's first and second grade room. In the main building, coming up the steps to the left was the first grade room of Mrs. Dovie Combs. Across the hall was the second grade room of Mrs. Sue Johnson. Beside her room was the third grade room of Mrs. Bertha Watts. At the top of the first part of the inside steps was Mrs. Naomi Herald's fourth grade room. Upstairs was Mrs. Gay Goff's fifth grade and Mrs. Elizabeth Henson's fifth grade. Around back were two rooms: Mr. Luther White's seventh grade math room and Mrs. Marie Couch's fifth grade room. At left of the big building were two self-contained classrooms. The first one was home of the seventh grade classroom of Mr. Marvin Meadows. Just behind it was the classroom building of Mr. McCreary's eighth grade room. Going to school at Quicksand was a pleasure. I don't know how grade school could have been any better. I graduated from Quicksand Grade School in 1961.
The Quicksand Post Office was housed in Ed Combs's store just down the hill from the school. It was here at the store that the school buses let students unload. Then everyone had to walk up the hill to school. Rain or shine we went up and down that hill. Ed had a good business servicing our every want in candy and ice cream. There were about 250 students attending the old school at the time.
