Fumes Cause Deaths
Four men died in a coal mine fire near Evansville,
Kentucky, last Saturday morning. The fires were reported under
control Monday afternoon by Elmer Layne, senior inspector of
the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals, Pikeville headquarters.
Those who died were Roland Grigsby, 33; Burgees
Neace, 36; his brother, Monticello Neace, 26; and Edgar Horn,
40.
It was estimated that the damage to the mine,
located three miles from Evanston in Breathitt County, the No.
3 mine of Pond Creek Pocahontas Company's Elkhorn Division, was
$125,000.
Fire broke out in the mine three miles from
Evanston in Breathitt County late Friday night, while the third
shift of some 35 men was on duty.
There was no explosion in the mine, and Layne
said the cause of the blaze, which spread to the coal seam and
mine timbers, has not been determined.
The bodies of all four victims were recovered.
