Getting Mail - 1857
In 1857 mail was delivered through Breathitt County only once a week. The mailman left with the mail from Hazel Green (Wolfe County) early Friday morning at 7. He passed through Frozen Creek, then Jackson, then Lost Creek in Breathitt County then on to Hazard and getting there by five p.m. on Saturday. Thus it took two full days of hard travel by horseback to get the mail to points in our county and Perry County. Then on Monday the mailman would start out from Hazard and arrive back in Hazel Green on Tuesday picking up mail on the way. The whole trip took four days back and forward. (Just think of what the old-time postman saw on his way 141 years ago!)
From Hazel Green, by Frozen Creek, Jackson, Lost Creek, and Mount Zion to Hazard, 58 miles and back, once a week.
