Old Breathitt County Jail - about 1908. "Bad" Tom Smith was hanged on June 28, 1895 just to the left of where the two men are standing. A crowd of over 5,000 saw the only legal hanging ever to take place in Jackson during the long, bloody career of Breathitt County. Note the background buildings. To the right is a large, two-story home, now gone. To the left is a white, wooden building. It was probably once used as a post office and store. Iron fences were once common in Jackson. The old jail was also the scene of a famous jail break in the 1920s which resulted in death and injury.
