Judge James Hargis of feud fame lived in this home at
the time he was killed by his son Beach in 1908. It was Judge Hargis and
Sheriff Edward Callahan who were accused of watching from the Hargis Brothers
Store while J.B. Marcum was killed just across the street in the door of
the Breathitt County Court House in Jackson, Kentucky on May 4, 1903. The
old home was destroyed some seventy years ago. It stood on what was once
called the Hargis Bottoms. Today the new Breathitt High School on Court
Street sits on this spot.
