What The Local Paper Said...
Editor's Note: Thought our readers might like to read what the local paper, The Jackson Times, said about the Clayhole Shootings at the time of the event. This article was taken from that paper the following week.
It is reported that Uncle Ed Combs and George Allen were disputing over a voter when Leslie Combs appeared on the scene, stepped into the voting house, and immediately turned around and shot George McIntosh. McIntosh was hit in the heart and killed instantly. When the firing ceased it was found that George McIntosh, Cleveland Combs, Asberry Combs, and Ethan Allen were killed. Leslie Combs, Hiram Campbell, Linville Miller, Tommy Miller, Will Barnett, Willie Davis, Floyd Napier, Ben Fugate, Ed Davis, French Combs, and Thomas Centers were wounded.
The disturbance was so shocking that the people left, except those who were trying to give aid and comfort to the dead and wounded and no election was attempted to be held. This is one of the saddest occurrences that has ever happened in this county and is causing great sorrow among the people.
Some of the wounded men were taken to Lexington on Tuesday night to a hospital and others were brought to the Bach Hospital here for treatment. It is to be hoped that all the wounded men will recover.
