Christmas cheer is contained
in the 75 baskets that were distributed here on Christmas Eve.
Shown above are some of the workers getting the baskets ready
(l-r): Estill Slone, Bill Mullins, Marcus ("Gabby")
and Kenneth Mullins, James R. Deaton, John W. Nickels, Charles
Elmer Terry, and Charles Lynch.
Seventy-five Christmas baskets were distributed
in this community during the morning of December 24th. The assembly
and distribution of the baskets was a community affair in which
civic service organizations, the churches, and many other groups
operated. The work of the Boy Scouts was outstanding.
Five dollars worth of groceries were placed
in each basket and then there was added, as free gifts from large
companies, enough additional merchandise to make the basket worth
at least $8.00.
The larger companies that contributed were
the Henry Fischer Packing Company, the Hays City Flour Mills,
the Chappell Milk Company, the Jackson Royal Cola Company, National
Biscuit Company, Streitman Biscuit Company, Honey Crust Bread
Company, and the Pennington Bakery.
Of the 75 baskets distributed to the families
that had been selected through the cooperation of the churches,
the social agencies and others, 38 were given by the Kiwanis
Club. Other baskets contributed were as follows:
Methodist Church, 10; Baptist Church, 7; Presbyterian
Church, 3; Christian Church, 2; Woman's Club, 5; American Legion,
5; Youth Fellowship group of Lees College, 4; and Mrs. A. W.
Brown, 1.
The annual enterprise is strictly a community
affair in which all groups and the entire citizenship of the
community cooperate in the most worthy and worthwhile effort.
