The Breathitt County War Memorial
Through the years Breathitt County has earned a national reputation for its brave soldiers. In fact, as a history marker on the courthouse square states, it is home to the "Volunteers." It is fitting, therefore, that a suitable area of honor be constructed to the memory of all Breathitt County soldiers, both men and women, who served in the Armed Forces during a time of war and conflict. A small group of local residents has taken up the project, and in a few, short years this group has established a beautiful memorial area on the east side of our courthouse. Their efforts are to applauded. There are several large stone monuments and stone tablets devoted to the wars and those who lost their lives in defense of our nation. Also, there is a wall of honor where anyone who served in any war may be honored by placing an engraved brick in their honor. A second bricking area is open to any person, club, event, or business. The whole project is on-going and growing at a good pace. It is one of which all Breathitt Countians should be proud. The following photos were taken of the area.
