The Hargis Commercial Bank was the largest bank in Breathitt County in 1922. It was once housed in the old John Hargis Building which still stands on Main Street. Then it was moved to the present location of the Citizens Bank on Main Street. When it went broke in the 1930s during the Great Depression it was said that over half the people of Breathitt County went broke with it. The above is a copy a report made to the Kentucky Banking Commissioner in March, 1922. Alexander H. Hargis was president. He was a brother to Judge James Hargis.
