Twelve deputies named by Sheriff
Carl Back have been sworn into their offices and three additional
ones have been named, but had not taken their oaths, the new
Sheriff stated yesterday afternoon.
The jovial new chief law enforcement officer
of the county, who was elected last November after winning the
Democratic nomination in one of the closest primaries ever held
in Breathitt County, named Shade Combs of Jackson as his Chief
Deputy.
Mr. Combs began his duties Monday morning
immediately after being named to the post and spent that and
Tuesday working with former Sheriff Walter Deaton and his chief
deputy, Arthur Haddix, in transfering the tax books to the new
sheriff.
Others appointed by Sheriff Back as deputies
are: Green G. Allen, Quicksand; Jerry Turner, War Creek; John
B. Morris, Elkatawa; Herman Barnett, Lost Creek; Hargis Sallee,
Haddix; Kelson Salyers, Bays; Granville Hardin, Portsmouth; Erie
C. Pelfrey, Jackson; Ruby Lovely, Clayhole; Price Montgomery,
Guage; and Timothy T. Herald, Crockettsville.
Appointed, but not sworn in as of yesterday,
are Robert Mullins, Taulbee; Press Taulbee, Taulbee; and Charlie
Cole, Altro.
