Here
is a 1948 Southern Bell Telephone & Telegraph Company listing
of persons and businesses in Jackson, Breathitt County, pages
14-17. Notice that the seven-digit numbering system of today was
still a thing of the future then. Telephone users simply picked
up their telephones and told the operator who they were trying
to reach. Phone numbers, at that time, consisted of four or five
characters, usually numbers (ex: 185) and/or numbers followed
by a dash and letter of the alphabet (ex: 216-W).
