In this photo, taken during the summer of 1913, just a couple of months before the great Halloween Fire of 1913, we can see the general area burned by the fire. The fire is said to have started in the Thompson Hotel, the large building in the center of the photo with a flat back. Note the three churches which faced each other along Main. They all burned. Building out toward the Mitch Crain Building (Chapman's Department Store) burned. Note the "Bull Durham" sign. That building burned. The fire swept up Main Street as far as the Jefferson Hotel and just across the street from it to what is today is the First National Bank building. The Redwine House is shown at lower right. It had been moved from its first location along Broadway, or it would have been burned too. At left center are the Strong and Terry homes mentioned in another photo in this section.
