Home-Built Sorghum Boiler Pit, 1940

Another 1940 photo taken by Wolcott shows a home-built boiler pit made from mud and rock, where the juice from the sorghum cane is boiled down to make molasses. According to Miss Wolcott, the man shown here doing the cooking went from farm to farm during cane season tending the making of molasses. He took a share of the syrup for his pay at the different mountaineers' homes in Breathitt County, Kentucky. (FSA Photograph)
